Dear wonderful garden lovers – spring is here, and with it comes the time to focus on the proper watering of your garden. To ensure your plants don't droop and you have a good harvest, you need plenty of water. We have gathered some tips for you that will accompany you through spring and summer.
Feel free to share your tips & tricks in the comments.
"Especially in springtime, plants, shrubs, and trees are on a growth path and require enough water and moisture to absorb nutrients. Ideally, nature takes care of the natural irrigation at this time. However, the last few years have also shown that this is not always the case, and you may need to assist."
"Then it means - turn the water back on, take the garden hose out of winter storage, and help the little protégés grow."
In general, it can be said that:
- Native plants are generally less maintenance-intensive. They are perfectly adapted to the prevailing conditions in your own garden, which means they require less water and care. Beautiful examples of near-natural perennials include the Carthusian pink, meadow sage, or mountain aster.
- Water as close to the ground as possible, because this way less water is lost and the water has an easier time reaching the roots of the plants.
- "Especially in spring, when you replant your plants, they subsequently need an extra portion of water. As a small rule of thumb, we recommend that the soil should be soaked with water to a depth of 20 centimeters."
- Water basically when the sun is at its weakest. The strength of the sun is often underestimated in spring, even though it is already very strong in April. To ensure that the water penetrates deep into the soil and does not evaporate immediately, you should water your garden and plants early in the morning or in the evening, every three to four days.
- The right equipment is essential. When watering with a hose, you should ensure that it is a high-quality garden hose that is preferably pressure, temperature, and UV resistant, as well as free from harmful substances (phthalates). In summer, it is your daily companion, so you need to be able to rely on it.
Have a wonderful start to spring!
